Ends—group Theoretical and Topological Aspects

چکیده

This is a survey of topological, group theoretical and some graph theoretical aspects of ends. After discussing the notion of ends in topology, we consider ends of graphs and show that the metric end topology of connected graphs is metrizable. The “1–2–Cantor theorem” is proved for graphs whose ends are all limit ends, that is, ends which are accumulation points of an orbit of the group of automorphisms. We also discuss ends of finitely generated groups, Stallings’ Structure Theorem and further applications concerning the cycle space of a graph and random walks.

Graph-theoretical versus topological ends of graphs

We compare the notions of an end that exist in the graph-theoretical and, independently, in the topological literature. These notions conflict except for locally finite graphs, and we show how each can be expressed in the context of the other. We find that the topological ends of a graph are precisely the undominated of its graph-theoretical ends, and that graph theoretical ends have a simple t...

Classical Wavelet Transforms over Finite Fields

This article introduces a systematic study for computational aspects of classical wavelet transforms over finite fields using tools from computational harmonic analysis and also theoretical linear algebra. We present a concrete formulation for the Frobenius norm of the classical wavelet transforms over finite fields. It is shown that each vector defined over a finite field can be represented as...

Topological Relationship Between One-Dimensional Box Model and Randić Indices in Linear Simple Conjugated Polyenes

The alternative double bonds and conjugation in the polyene compounds are one of the main properties in these compounds. Each carbon-carbon bonds in a polyene compound along the chain has appreciable double-bond character. The p-electrons are therefore not localized but are relatively free to move throughout the entire carbon skeleton as an one-dimensional box. The skeleton be considered as a r...

On the homology of locally compact spaces with ends

We propose a homology theory for locally compact spaces with ends in which the ends play a special role. The approach is motivated by results for graphs with ends, where it has been highly successful. But it was unclear how the original graph-theoretical definition could be captured in the usual language for homology theories, so as to make it applicable to more general spaces. In this paper we...

Pii: S0004-3702(01)00055-8

The aspect graph (AG) has been proposed as a viewer-centered tool for object recognition. Although the aspects could be used for recognition from one image, the full information stored in the AG (aspects and visual events) suggests a multiple views, possibly active, approach. The topological nature of the AG also suggests a topological match of images of the unknown object and stored aspects. In...
